Getting Started

0. Your Browser

Many of the features on this site depend heavily on javascript to function. Unfortunately Javascript support varies significantly across browsers and although we have confirmed that the site works in recent versions of Firefox and Safari we cannot guarantee its functionality in other browsers (Internet Explorer in particular).

If the site does not work for you please do drop us a line (see info below) with information about your browser and the brokenness and we'll see what we can do.

1. Create a New Thread

  1. Visit the new thread page.
  2. Choose a title, e.g. Great Military Leaders
  3. Hit the button ...

2. The Thread (and Factlet) Editor

You're now in the thread editor. You will have tabs showing the various alternative views you can have on the thread (edit view should be selected). You're thread is currently empty so:

  1. Search for some factlets to add
  2. If you find a suitable factlet just click on the green '+' to add it to the thread
  3. If no suitable factlet has been found you can click on the link at the end of the list of factlets to create a new one.
  4. Repeat ...

Once you've built up a good number of items in the thread you can:

3. Visualize the Thread

  1. Simple list: see the default 'thread view'
  2. By time: see the chrono view
  3. By time and space: see the geochrono view

Going Further

Creating Factlets Directly (Bookmarklet)

You can create factlets directly outside of the thread editor. Just visit: /factlet/create

We've also created a handy bookmarklet to make it easy for you to create factlets direct from wikipedia. To install the bookmarklet drag the link below to your bookmarks toolbar (in IE: right-click the link and select Add to Favourites). For more details on installing bookmarklets see the del.icio.us help page on the topic.
